Garden Projects Updated!!

We have cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, zuccini, hubbard squash, parsley and egg plant in these trays.

The garden shed!  I organized it yesterday.  I am pleased with how it's coming along!!

I just finished cleaning out the side yard.  I used my trusty Japaneese garden tool that I bought at Ginger Street.  It works MAGIC in our yard!  Talk to Laura and Joe about getting one.  It takes the drugery out of gardening!!!!

The weeping willow tree is 3 years old.  When Bob (our neighbor who does takes care of the grass) was going to week wack, George said "By the way - leave the tree."  Bob said, "Good thing you said that.  I thought it was a weed.")  YIKES!  I'm going to put a scalloped cement boarder around the tree.  I had to do that to my hydrangia.  He wacked it down several years in a row!

The terraced hill has the herbs.  So far rosemary, chives, oregano, sage & mint.

The compost Tea is ready to go.  The large raised bed (back right) has onions and potatoes in it.  The front beds have lettuce, spinach, Russian Kale, brocolli, cabbage and more.

There are poly tunnels covering most of our raised garden beds.
On the left hand side there are 3 beds covered.  (one poly tunnel - 2 in the greenhouse.)
On the right there are 4 8' x 4' beds covered as well as an 8' x 8' bed covered.

Garden Projects for 2014

George & I have been busy working on our yard and garden.  He's built a little place for all of our gardening supplies.  He used PVC pipe and built poly tunnels, to cover our raised beds - so we can grow food & donate the extra produce to the Rainier Emergency Food Center.  He built a strawberry planter, compost tea container and rotating compost bin out of a 55 gallon pickle barrels.  We have food growing already!

Check out these pictures.  (BTW - we both love our Tobacco Road - aka - REDNECK greenhouse.  It's literally held together with duct tape!

This is the little chicken coop George made several years ago.  We had a weasel, who killed our chickens.  We didn't want to kill the weasel, so we donated the coop and portable fencing to an elderly couple - who needed it.  Behind the chicken coop was part of a carport - covered in plastic - held on with duct tape - to protect our gardening supplies during the winter.  That's gone, now, too.

Below is four pictures of George's revolving compost barrel.  I

Buckets to plant pickling cucumbers in - to keep them off of the ground.
(Note:  there are drainage holes drilled in the bottom of each barrel.)

8' x 8' raised bed with 3 types of potatoes and onions.

Russian kale.

Below:  There are 4 pictures of the strawberry barrel we made out of a
55 gallon barrel.  There are holes in the center pipe, so we can water and
fertilize the plants from the inside out.  The plant pockets (shaped with
wine bottles) will hold moisture when it rains.

Our Tobacco Road REDNECK Greenhouse!  (See the
piping remaining from winter garden storage.)

Now we have several more beds covered with poly
tunnels.  They hold the heat and keep the plants warm
at night.

The terraced hill is where we grow herbs.  Our old
compost bins (still use) are made out of old pallets.
The compost tea barrel works great!

We now have 4 framed poly tunnels & the 8' x8' poly
tunnel is draped & unframed.

The chicken wire will keep the rabbits out of the garden when we remove the plastic.

Mini-Hutch with 2 Drawers

George just designed and made this mini-hutch.   It has one door in the bottom, two drawers in the middle and three upper shelves.  It is made out of pine.  He just finished sanding it today.  It has not been stained, nor does it have any finish on it, yet.

Check out the pictures:

Rocking Horse Riding ROCKS!

King Lion George Johnson made a rocking horse and donated it to our silent auction last fall.  We received the following email from the winners of the auction today!  Thank you for sharing your picture and story with us, Jacqueline and Dave.  We're glad Isaac enjoys riding his horse!

Hi George,

We won a Rainier Lions silent auction item last year and gave it to our great-nephew for Christmas. We wanted to show you how popular it is!
That’s Isaac on the rocking horse, singing “I’m a cowboy”.

Thanks for the great wood-working,

Jacqueline & Dave Pratt
